Sweet 16???

My son will turn 16 on Tuesday, May 24!  He is feeling really grown up and doesn't have a lot of time for me which something new that I'm having to get used to.  I can handle that he's growing up.  He's mature for his age he has a job and he's a hard worker.

Here's the tricky part.....should I buy him a vehicle?  He wants a 4 wheel drive truck, which is a bit out of my price range to say the very least.  The 4 wheel drive vehicles that are in price range aren't "cool".  I checked the cost of insurance for my son, full coverage is over $200 and liability is over $80 per month.

What have other parents done for their children or what did your parents do for you?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. I know as a teenager I didn't have much of a choice for my first vehicle. It allowed me to get from point A to B and of course I thought I was too cool to be in a "Dodge Colt" and of course I was because I had never even heard of the darn car until my mom bought it for me at an auction. Needless to say I had the car for about a month before I got a new one. I really don't have much more advise because my oldest is only 10 so I’m interested in some solutions to this one myself for future references. Especially when my son wants me to buy a Lamborghini!!!! LOL NOW THAT’S FUNNY!!!

  2. I am in the same boat with a soon to be 16 year old son. He also wants a 4X4 truck. He has a summer job at he pool, I have set my price range and if he wants over that he has to find a way to compensate me. Which is why he is workig at our local pool this summer hoping to boost his money towards a new vehicle. I must say I have been on craigslist quite a bit and found some great deals, especially if you are wlling to drive 50 to 100 miles away. I did find a truck he liked in my price range but it was gone before I had a chance to look at it. Good luck as I feel your pain.

  3. I search Craigslist almost daily. I found something that was decent today that I will test drive after my son goes to school tomorrow. I'm trying to make this top secret. My son comes home after school everyday thinking I've done nothing to find him a vehicle.

  4. My parents gave me my older brother car when i was in your son age and i was so happy with it. I think you should get him small car that you can pay for. He will appreciate it especially if you make it to him as sprice.
